What happens to the doves after they are released?
Descending from the Sion strain of rock doves dating back to 19th century France, our beautiful snow-white doves have special instincts that, with proper training, allow them to fly home to their loft after each release.
How do the doves find their way home?
No one knows for certain, though some common elements that most bird fanciers agree are needed are daylight, fair weather, excellent health, and proper training. Some research suggests that the birds see ultraviolet light and use it to navigate their course. Also, an "internal compass" tunes in to the earth's magnetic field, contributing to their keen sense of direction. Ultimately, how they do it remains a mystery, and a miracle.
Can other kinds of birds be trained to fly home?
Only breeds from the homing pigeon family, such as these Rock Doves, can be trained to fly home. This is due their special instincts, as well as many generations of selective breeding and training.
Are the doves well cared for?
Our doves have their very own large and comfortable loft. The loft is dry and cleaned regularly. The birds are given healthy seed, vitamin supplements, and clean water to maintain their strength and health. They are better nourished than the average human being! Their lifespan is 12-15 years, compared with 2-3 years of similar breeds in the wild.
